Visit Jakarta and the island of Java

When you arrive in Jakarta, take a tour of the city to become familiar with the country. Remember: the capital is a highly populated city. Jakarta has many museums and monuments, such as the Monas and Merdeka Square, the world's largest square. Make sure to visit one of the “cultural villages” as well, where betawi traditions are conserved. The largest village is Setu Babakan. These villages are showcases for traditional Indonesian culture, including dwellings and the traditional Indonesian way of life.

There are many things to see on the island of Java, away from the bustling city of Jakarta: visit the Kraton, the sultan's palace in Yogyakarta which is like a city within a city, admire Borobudur, the country's most beautiful and oldest temple or discover the Hindu temple, Prambanan.

It is possible to reach all of the country's islands by boat from Jakarta. Once arrived, you can travel between cities by bus. Visit Sumatra and Bali, favourite tourist attractions: spend at least a week to discover beaches, shows, markets and exceptional sites. The island of Lombok is less touristic and offers visitors an ideal place for relaxation between mountains and white sandy beaches. Finally, a visit to West Papua New Guinea will provide a more authentic immersion in Indonesian culture. Western New Guinea, formerly called Irian Jaya, is a natural haven for wildlife and botanical species. Located near the equator, Indonesia has a hot, humid climate. The best times to visit are during the dry season in May, June and September, or even October.
