The Democratic Republic of Congo has more than 75 million inhabitants. The official language is French, but Lingala, Kikongo, Swahili and Tchiluba are also recognised as national languages. The population is made up of several hundred different ethnic groups. The main groups are the Bantu (accounting for nearly 80% of the population), the Sudanese, the Nilotics, the Pygmies and the Hamites. This diversity in the population gives the country its uniquely rich culture, with widely differing religions, traditions and rites.
